⚓ SUBJECT: FIRST DAY ONBOARD - WHAT TO CHECK AS AN ENGINEER 🚢
🧰 For new Engine Cadets or Junior Engineers, your first day onboard can set the tone for the entire contract.
Here’s a quick checklist to help you start right 👇
1️⃣Engine Room Familiarization — Learn your way around. Identify emergency exits, fire extinguishers, quick-closing valves, and escape routes.
2️⃣Machinery Overview — Get familiar with main engine, generators, pumps, compressors, purifiers, and sewage systems. Know where everything is before you need it.
3️⃣Daily Routines — Understand watch schedules, maintenance routines, and standing orders from the Chief Engineer.
4️⃣Safety First — Locate emergency stops, fire detection panels, and CO₂ release system. Always follow PPE and lockout-tagout procedures.
5️⃣Ask, Observe, Learn — Never pretend to know. Ask your seniors, take notes, and observe how they troubleshoot. Experience is your best teacher at sea.
⚙️Every small habit you form now — from reporting to cleaning tools — builds your reputation as a reliable engineer.
