ProEnglish Theatre of Ukraine
professional independent theatre in English in Kyiv
a unique theatre for Ukraine: not only every performance is in English; all communication with the audience is in English also.
Founded in 2018 aiming at making Ukrainian theatre productions closer to the world performing them in the language the world would understand. The other goal is to bring the most progressive theatre techniques to Ukraine.
Normally ProEnglish Theatre work with the text of contemporary world authors: Maryin Macdonagh (Cripples of Inishmaan), Yasmina Reza (Hamster Saga), Markus Zusak (The Book of Sirens) Wendy Macleod (The House of Yes); although they did stage some classics: William Shakespeare (Forgetting Othello), Henrik Ibsen (Hedda Gabler) and Ukrainian playwrights translated into English (Nina Zakhozhenko, Anna Halas).
The audience of ProEnglush Theatre are:
- the foreigners who either live or attend Kyiv
- Ukrainian youth
- every theatre lover who speaks English
ProEnglish Theatre creates a warm and home-like atmosphere, one of the things that the teatre does is a discussion in English after pretty much every performance with the audience and creative team.
Theatre actively tours Europe, takes part in international festivals. In Ukraine ProEnglish Theatre conducts 2 annual international festivals: Ukraine Fringe (the first fringe festival in the country) and Solo Play Day Fest (monodrama festival)
In Kyiv ProEnglish Theatre of Ukraine perform at Try Teatry Hub (3 Simi Brodskykh) (this space also hosts couple other theatres (hence Try Teatry) as well as ProEnglish Drama School) Try Teatry Hub - is a cosy basement art space, performances don't stop during air raid alarm. Sometimes ProEnglish Theatre perform at other venues in town.
Alex Borovenskiy is the founder and artistic director of ProEnglish Theatre of Ukraine.
ProEnglish Theatre repertoire at the moment: "Human Wrongs", "Once Upon a Time in Ukraine", "Three Years Now", "The Book of Sirens". 2 new productions are being rehearsed. Theatre also experiments with the formats: Monologues Night, Theatre24, English Songs as Comedy - these events are now the trademark of the theatre.
Normally ProEnglish Theatre have 2-4 shows in Kyiv monthly.
