⚓️Anchor of a Ship
Anchoring is the process of dropping and securing the anchor on the seabed to keep the vessel in position while waiting for a berth, pilot, or instructions.
⭐Anchor — a heavy metal device attached to a chain that holds the ship against wind and current.
⭐Reasons for Anchoring:
• Waiting for berth or pilot
• Cargo operations at anchorage
• Crew change
• Awaiting owner/charterer instructions
• Turning the vessel around
⭐Main Parts of the Anchor System:
• Anchor — two working anchors and one spare
• Anchor chain — provides holding force (1 shackle = 27.5 m)
• Hawse pipe — guides the chain and anchor outside the hull
• Anchor lashing (Devil’s Claw) — secures the anchor when stowed
• Chain stopper — transfers load to ship’s structure
• Windlass — raises and lowers the anchor
• Chain locker — stores the anchor chain
• Bitter end — secured end of the chain with quick release
